Simon in Action at Clumber Sprint
In his own words
CLUMBER SPRINT 5KM/20KM/2.5KM
Well as usual I woke up nervous it had been a cold night and it was overcast and drizzling outside. Started my morning routine of eating toast, downing the fluids and checking my kit for the hundredth time. After checking and mounting my bike onto the car rack I set off on the short journey to clumber park after 30 minutes queuing to park I joined another queue to register and stack the bike, all credit to the organisers as once I was in the sign on tent I was processed and racking the bike within 15 minutes. Anyway Bike racked I started my warm up routines, as there was a 15-20 minute gap between the classic and sprint race starts I watched the men and woman set off on the classic race great to watch and just the extra buzz I needed ready for the start of my race.
So two minutes for the start the warm kit came off and I joined 169 people on the start line, the drizzle had stopped had a good first run easing into it and not making my last race mistake of sprinting off at the start, it was an undulating run section which was a run out 2.5km and run back same route had a good steady transition and set off well on the bike section felt like I had a really good bike even though when the lads came thrashing past on the tri bikes they made you look like you were standing still however the extra bike training had paid off and I kept up a good pace however I did get a bit excited towards the end and paid the price on my second run split however I did enough to put I good time in. On the second run I had a good race going on with another competitor who pushed me right to the end.
Well what did I learn from this race, Well I Still need to work on my race nutrition as I’m not getting enough fluids on board during the ride split which did effect me on the second run also need to practice bike to run bricks as I did suffer and lose time on the second run however I’m very happy with my results as this was only my second Duathlon ever. It was a fantastic event and with the second largest attendance of 900 competitors it had a great atmosphere, I’m now looking forward to my first triathlon in April which is the Duston sprint 400m/20km/5km.
My overall time was 1:17:16 R1 23:24 T1 1:21 Bike 39:13 T2 1:09 R2 12:06
overall position 63/169
